The Đurđevića Tara Bridge hangs 172 metres above the Tara River, its five reinforced-concrete arches spanning 365 metres of void. Completed in 1940 by engineer Mijat Trojanović, the structure served as a critical Balkans trade route until Axis forces severed its central span in 1942.
Rebuilt in 1946, the bridge remains one of Europe's highest road crossings and anchors the northern entry to Tara Canyon, the continent's deepest river gorge at 1,300 metres.
Today the site doubles as an engineering landmark and launchpad for one of Europe's longest single-span ziplines. The Tara Bridge zipline runs parallel to the roadway, stretching across the canyon at a sustained elevation that few comparable rides match. Riders clip into a steel cable system engineered to withstand Balkan wind shear and cross the gorge in under a minute, reaching speeds that depend on body weight and morning thermals. The harness design prioritises security over comfort, a deliberate trade-off that reflects the site's operational priorities.
The canyon itself predates the bridge by millennia. Limestone walls rise in horizontal strata, carved by glacial melt and sustained flow from Durmitor's peaks. The Tara River carries snowmelt through a protected corridor that UNESCO recognised in 1980 as part of the Durmitor National Park designation. Rafters share the lower canyon with endemic trout species; overhead, the zipline and road bridge occupy separate but converging sight lines.
Operators launch riders from a platform fixed to the northern abutment. The cable descends at a shallow gradient, crossing the midpoint where the 1942 demolition once left a 50-metre gap. Arrival occurs on the southern side, where a secondary platform and stairway return visitors to road level. The turnaround cycle accommodates roughly 30 riders per hour during summer peak, with morning slots prioritised for wind stability. Đurđevića Tara retains a functional, unpolished character; the site offers adrenaline infrastructure, not resort amenities, and the aesthetic reflects that distinction.
